5 Fringe shows you can’t miss if you love sketch comedy

Posted on: July 7th, 2012 by aaron

Toronto in July is hot with shows. The 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival gives a theatre-going audience a chance to see something new and exciting. Here are five Fringe shows that you can’t miss if you consider yourself a true fan of sketch comedy, and here they are presented in alphabetical order. All tickets are $10, $11 in advanced. And remember, it’s the Fringe, so if you show up even one second late, you do not get into the show.

A Brief History of History: A 3-disc Box Set

Toronto’s Starwipe Comedy reminds us, “history is written by the victors. But what about the Gregs? Or the Daryls?” This show looks into the more interesting parts of history providing a, “true account of totally fabricated events”. If history is written by the victors, rewriting and performing history is by the Adam Henkel, Stephen Mashalidis, Ely Rygier, Omid Salari, Al Val, and Adrian Yearwood.

All the World’s a Stage of Grief

This show has been pared down to one hour from its original two-act Second City Conservatory graduation show format. Written and performed by Chris Attrill, Ted Hambly, Jonathan Hock, Alan Kliffer, Jennifer Murray, Jacob Pacey, Brian Reynolds and Alessandra Vite, and directed by Aurora Browne, you will be delighted by the concentrated comedy written entirely through improvisation by some of Toronto’s up-and-coming performers. If it’s grief, it’s good grief.

Peter ‘n Chris and the Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel

Who keeps murdering people at the Hungry Heart Motel? It’s the motel manager! But I haven’t ruined anything. This Vancouver duo won the 2011 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival Audience Choice Award and performed in the 2012 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival Best of the Fest showcase. In this comedic play, Peter Carlone and Chris Wilson take you on a spooky journey, executed with great feats of physical comedy.

Tony Ho’s Sad People

As they say in their press release, “Sad People explores the mental illness, depression and general sadness that surrounds our lives – in an unexpected, hilarious format that is one part performance art, one part support group”. Performed by Roger Bainbridge, Adam Niebergall and Miguel Rivas, it’s also the only show that will be different every time by throwing in a rotating cast of special guests including:  Evany Rosen, Tom Henry, Anders Yates, Kris Siddiqi, Ken Hall,  Henri Fabergé, Kathleen Phillips, James Hartnett, Sandra Battaglini, Dan Beirne  and Freddie Rivas.

Two Weird Ladies Bomb the Fringe

Mandy Sellers and Laura Salvas have created the aptly named duo Two Weird Ladies to wreak havoc on the Fringe with explosive comedy. Directed by Kirsten Gallagher, expect characters and scenes you can relate to, “except for the part of the show where the Ladies try to blow up the theatre – only the severely deranged can relate to that.”

Sketchy Singles Night – Meet your future sketch troupe

Posted on: May 7th, 2012 by aaron 1 Comment

Do you want to perform sketch comedy? Do you have a bunch of great ideas? Are you lonely?

You are not alone!

The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival is hosting its first ever Sketchy Singles Night, a social for people who want to do sketch comedy but don’t have anyone to do it with.

Join us Saturday May 12th at 10:30pm in the Comedy Bar cabaret space for a singles bash that may just transform your performance career forever!

This comes one month before our 2012 Sketch Com-Ageddon, where your future new troupe could win $480 and a guaranteed spot in the 2012 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival.

We will be giving away lottery spots for 3 minutes on stage. Do some improv or read a sketch you wrote. You can even do stand-up. Do whatever. Just give everyone in the room a sense of your comic sensibility. It’s a great ice-breaker.

Everyone who attends gets a snazzy name tag. Also, put your name and email down on our contact sheet, which will be emailed to everyone on the list. That way you can easily contact the people you want to work with. It’s easy networking!

All you need to join the fun is a $2 donation at the door to the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, a registered charity that wants to get you on stage!
