Troupe of the Day – LaughDraft

Posted on: November 6th, 2011 by brie

Each day leading up to the 2011 Festival, the TOsketchfest Blog will feature one of our 40+ awesome comedy troupes.

Today’s troupe of the day is the LaughDraft

The LaughDraft Comedy Team is formed of young comics brought together by the Humber College School of Creative and Performing Arts Comedy Writing & Performance program. Each member has a different background and a distinctive appreciation for comedy. Together, they are a talented team of writers, performers, producers and technical experts.

Since the inaugural web-site launch show in June at the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture, LaughDraft have been producing regular monthly variety performances and posting comic videos online; including sketches, articles, musical pieces by our very own PrankGang, and regular up-to-date news updates with our LaughDraft News team.

This is LaughDraft’s first time performing at TOsketchfest and they’re super grateful both to the organizers of the festival as well as to Andrew Clark, the program coordinator of the Humber Comedy program, for letting us out off-campus after-hours.

FUN FACT:  I’m in this troupe.  This post is blatant self-promotion and I’m totally OK with that.

Check out their troupe profile to find out when they are playing, and to grab your tickets.

Troupe of the Day – Queer Comedy Collective

Posted on: November 4th, 2011 by brie

Each day leading up to the 2011 Festival, the TOsketchfest Blog will feature one of our 40+ awesome comedy troupes.

Today’s troupe of the day is the Queer Comedy Collective

What can you expect from Canada’s first and only queer sketch troupe?   They promise to be a breath of fresh air on Toronto’s sketch-comedy scene. That means no homophobic jokes but all the internalized homophobia a Queer could want! The Queer Comedy Collective is a high-calibre collection of Canadian acting and comedy talent.

QCC is composed of Darryl Dinn, Andrya Duff, Susan Fischer, Robert Keller and Lindy Zucker, all of whom have very impressive backgrounds in the performing arts scene here in Toronto, including regular performances around town and a special run at this year’s Pride Festival.

FUN FACT:  QCC member Susan Fischer is the creator of the inimitable Evelyn Reese character, a fave at the Toronto Fringe Festival, and Darryl Dinn is the guy in the sponge towel costume in that ad.  You know the one.

Check out their troupe profile to find out when they are playing, and to grab your tickets.

His identity erased. His past stolen. His whereabouts unknown. The original video…The Waldo Ultimatum.

Troupe of the Day – Good Game

Each day leading up to the 2011 Festival, the TOsketchfest Blog will feature one of our 40+ awesome comedy troupes.

Today’s troupe of the day is Good Game

You say it after playing a sport whether you win or lose, but when it comes to Good Game playing TOsketchfest, you’re a winner every time!  Good Game Productions is a comedy production company/sketch troupe hailing from London and Toronto, consisting of Craig Scorgie, Nick Chenosky, David Horn and Amber Melhado.

They’ve been performing their fun and funky style of sketch around the comedy venues and festivals of Toronto and they’ve been featured in the London Fringe Festival and Nuit Blanche.  They’ve also got a collection of highly hilarious multimedia productions and short films on the inter-web.  This is Good Game’s second appearance at the TOsketchfest and we are delighted to welcome them back!

FUN FACT: The kids from Good Game are basically Sketch-Comedy-High-School-Sweethearts.  They all met in high school and have been performing together ever since!

Troupe of the Day – Asianspoitation

Posted on: November 1st, 2011 by brie

Each day leading up to the 2011 Festival, the TOsketchfest Blog will feature one of our 40+ awesome comedy troupes.

Today’s troupe of the day is Asiansploitation

What do Andrea James Lui, Darrel Gamotin, Franco Nguyen, Gene Abella, James Cheng, Jeff B. Santos, Lana Carillo  all have in common?  A mutual affection for comedy, that’s what!  This All-Asian powerhouse of funny formed in 2003, when its founding members met performing improv at Bad Dog Theatre.  From there, they met other improvisers and actors with similar geographic and cultural origins, who shared their passion for comedy.

Each member brings their own diverse artistic background to the troupe; they are actors, improvisers, musicians and so much more!

Asiansploitation created Be Pacific! in 2006 and they have been performing various sold-out shows all around Toronto ever since.  Their latest conquest was the Toronto Fringe Festival, where their review, Asiansploitation Spanks the Tiger, (2010) won Patrons’ Pick and the Just For Laughs’ Best of Toronto Fringe.   Their upcoming show All Grown Up is already creating a huge buzz!

Fun fact:  Asiansploitation‘s director, Andrew Currie, was one of the two Devil’s Advocates back on Speakers Corner in the 90′s.   Remember them?  They were awesome!

Check out their troupe profile to find out when they are playing, and to grab your tickets.

Troupe of the Day – Vest of Friends

Posted on: October 31st, 2011 by brie 1 Comment

Each day leading up to the 2011 Festival, the TOsketchfest Blog will feature one of our 40+ awesome comedy troupes.

Today’s troupe of the day is Vest of Friends.

Proof that in this day and age, it really doesn’t hurt to get an education, Marc Hallworth, Morgan George, Reid Brackenbury and Evan Richardson met while studying Comedy: Writing & Performance at Humber College.  There, they crafted a sketch troupe whose clever writing and sharp delivery has enchanted audiences all over Toronto and recently, Montreal. They also crafted several snazzy vests.

The Vests performed in TOsketchfest last year as representatives of Humber’s comedy program.  We gave them an A+ and now we’re thrilled to have them back!  They’ve been busy bees since then; they’ve graduated college, they run a monthly variety show at Comedy Bar and a weekly open-mic stand-up room in the Junction.  Recently, they were seen showcasing their comedy goods for Just For Laughs, so it’s safe to say we can expect great and funny things from these guys – not to mention an interesting and informative guided tour of the great city of Toronto, (a bunch of them work as tour guides!)

Fun fact: If you trace each of the Vest of Friends’ lineage back far enough, you’ll see they’re each descendants of hobbits.

Check out their troupe profile to find out when they are playing, and to grab your tickets.
