Whyte Wyne and Young Riesling bring an aggressively Canadian blend of hip hop swagger with a surprisingly woke POV. These boys are caught between their small-town Alberta life and the Big Smoke. Their concerts, or as they like to call them “Tastings” feature high energy musical comedy complete with projected concert graphics, flashy clothes, and everything you’d expect at a rap show...and maybe a few things you didn’t. Truss, its gonna be lit Fam!
Whyte Wyne and Young Riesling (Calwyn Shurgold and Antony Hall) first joined forces back in 2016 while taking The Second City’s Longform improv conservatory program. After constantly dropping Drake references during improv scenes they soon became fast friends. They officially paired up at the inaugural Tiny Deck Comedy Fest where they performed their debut set. Ever since the pair never looked back steadily booking shows, and festivals – becoming a local favorite in the Toronto comedy scene. In just under 3 years these wanna be rap stars took their act from stage to screen in the form of a digital series, Ming’s Dynasty – Now Streaming in Canada on CBC GEM, and soon to be available in the U.S. on Ficto.
The boys blended their hip-hop fantasy world of Whyte Wyne & Young Riesling with Antony’s very real life experience of growing up in Alberta with his immigrant family running a small-town Chinese Restaurant. The premise of Ming’s Dynasty is simple – What if this pair of aspiring Toronto rappers had to drop everything, and move to Alberta to run a Chinese Restaurant? The show heavily features the duo’s original music, produced by Matt Dailey aka their resident DJ Mr. Dailey. Their songs come out of a genuine love for hip hop and ride a fine line between parody and simply good music. Just because a song is funny doesn’t mean it can’t be a banger! You can listen to the Ming’s Dynasty Mix-tape Volume 1 on Spotify and all other major music streaming platforms.
